Paranormal Ruptures:
Critical Approaches to Exceptional Experiences

The paranormal is more than just scary. It threatens our normal perceptions of reality and cuts to the core of human experience. This book and each individual chapter, in its own unique way, make this case by bringing together scientific research and scholarship from cultural and critical studies. Indeed, if the paranormal terrifies you even a little bit, imagine the impact on society if some of these exceptional experiences turn out to be true. Truth, as we will see, is often times stranger than fiction and is not so easily assured in our modern world of advancing technology and social change. Often relegated to myths or tall tales, the paranormal is rather already here among us, summoning and sometimes bedeviling us to reconsider our usual ways of understanding. This book is an invitation to just such a journey.

Decolonizing Parapsychology | Jacob Glazier

Decolonizing Parapsychology | Jacob Glazier

Introduction: How does parapsychology continue to perpetuate colonial ideologies? Certainly, with the limited number of researchers in the field coupled with the underfunded institutional support for the discipline, this question may strike many as not pertinent or even unrelated to the study of psi. On the contrary, if parapsychology wants to forge new connections with other-than-Eurocentric worldviews, while perhaps even increasing the mainstream acceptance it has long sought after, this issue, now more than any ever, should arguably be the leading problematic in the field, after only, perhaps, investigating psi itself.  A recent trend in psychology has been the call to decolonize the discipline, perhaps most typified in the recent conference held by Columbia University (Teachers College, 2021). The speakers offered tips for understanding the ways that, for example, in clinical supervision, supervisors may unwittingly be passing their values onto their supervisees by, put very curiously, not holding space for dissenting voices or alternative approaches. Even research practices in psychology that parallel to an extent those of parapsychology were held up to critical questioning: the fact that white supremacy is perpetuated by adhering to outdated protocols that were deemed the most scientific in the past while, at the same time, quashing dissenting, non-Eurocentric, or indigenous methods at investigating the world. The presenters were clear: the process of decolonization is a long one, and psychology (and we could assume, here, parapsychology by extension) has a lot of work to do. Decolonization is not just a political or social issue, as it may appear at first blush. Rather, critically examining the ideologies that are assumed as categorical and allowed to propagate goes for the heart of what it means to do good science. In terms of gender equity, Zingrone and Alvarado (2019) offer a brief overview but solid foundation upon which to build a more probing critique. As scientists, we must ask ourselves: if psi is that anomalous ‘what’ that seems to defy normal explanatory models, shows weak significance, or eludes attempts at replication, does that mean that psi doesn’t exist? Or perhaps the research methods that were co-opted from the colonizing heritage of the natural sciences that parapsychologists have been using have been the wrong ones all along. The call to ‘decolonize parapsychology’ inaugurates the couple first steps toward a much longer journey. If we are to take seriously the fact that forms of racism, colonialism, sexism and other prejudices are alive and well in our disciplinary practices and circles, then it is incumbent upon us as ethical scholars to do the work to see the way our research adheres to, circulates, or, in the best case, rejects these kinds of ideologies. --- The Parapsychological Association is an international professional organization of scientists and scholars engaged in the study of psi (or 'psychic') experiences, such as telepathy, clairvoyance, psychokinesis, psychic healing, and precognition. Critical Approaches to Exceptional Experiences | Jacob Glazier

Jacob W. Glazier, PhD, LPC, NCC holds an Assistant Professor of Psychology appointment in the Department of Anthropology, Sociology, and Psychology at the University of West Georgia. His research program explores the problematics of exceptional experience, psi as a critique of physicalist science, and the deconstruction of skeptical explanations of the paranormal: How can researchers use the knowledge and tropes from parapsychology to challenge the hegemony of orthodox science? ABSTRACT: Introduction: this brief video presentation, I detail the recent shift in parapsychology toward more inclusive perspectives and standards. As an important case in point, the Journal of Anomalistics has a forthcoming issue building on the initial insights of the Women in Parapsychology conference of the Parapsychology Foundation that took place in 1991 (Coly & White, 1994). There have also been efforts by the PA to promote membership diversity and raise awareness around inclusivity (Ventola et al., 2021). I have argued, in various ways, that parapsychology would benefit from decolonizing its scientific practice (Glazier, 2021b) and adopting an approach more in line with critical theory (Glazier, 2021a). Critical analyses of exceptional experiences lay-bare the various power effects at work in subjugating the field’s scholastic reputability, trace the textual effect of paranormal tropes, and work toward envisioning a more ethical scientific practice – how the scientific tradition has failed to take into account subjective values in the scientific process, values that, in their worst form, appear as misogyny, white supremacy, and human exceptionalism. Objectivity, just like psi, is not a stand-alone variable or term – something that should be sought after, procedurally secured, and achieved. Rather, both are through and through implicated in the very research process itself. In qualitative research, we understand this through the concept of reflexivity (Finlay, 1998) and in parapsychological research through its close kin, the experimenter effect (see the classic text in parapsychology that grounds the field in a natural scientific approach, Rhine & Pratt, 1974). When compared to the experimental literature in parapsychology, qualitative research occupies but a small allotment (Murray & Wooffitt, 2010). While this advance is certainly to the field’s credit, nonetheless, there has been virtually no scholarship, apart from feminism, aimed at applying critical analysis and theory toward researching exceptional experiences (see Williams, 1996, as a stand-out exception). I hope to not only begin to explore this foreign and exciting terrain, but also to encourage others in the discipline to follow suit – to see the value in, for instance, using the tropes found in the ‘text’ of paranormal studies to challenge legendary or physicalist models of reality. The Ethical Implications Animism Has for Parapsychology| Jacob W. Glazier

Jacob W. Glazier, Ph.D in Psychology, is Adjunct Professor of the Department of Positive Human Development and Social Change at the Life University, in Georgia, USA. His main areas of research interest include ecology and the paranormal, animism, paranthropology, the philosophy of parapsychology, psychoanalysis and parapsychology, and trickster theory. Recent trends in science studies, anthropology, and aesthetics have returned to an understanding of the world that is grounded in the messy entwinement that interconnects beings of all kinds. This has been traditionally known as animism. Yet, what this ‘new animism’ postulates goes far beyond seeing the world through the lens of tribalism or indigeneity. This neoanimism, rather, brings into the fold of the world beings and phenomena that include the technological, the immaterial, and objects of analysis in the laboratory. There are three main lines of argumentation to be made regarding the implications this neoanimism has for parapsychology: (1) facts derived from the laboratory are created through a complex network of interactions that are then often not recognized by those doing the research, (2) this complex network is built on a heritage that is grounded in specific subjugating effects, and (3) moving away from privileging the laboratory can create a space for other methods at discovering truth that may be more ethical with regard, specifically, to ecology and subjectivity. Why, then, is parapsychology still trying to replicate the apparatuses and methodologies of physicalism and experimentation? Presumably to establish the reality of psi, even though this ‘reality’ is continually challenged by skeptics and other scientists. Invoking an alternative endeavor, perhaps, parapsychology might better be able to make sense out of paranormality through an animistic frame. Such a shift could conceivably admit psi into its fold of worldhood thereby calling on parapsychologists to develop new tools and methodologies for exploring this uncharted terrain. Presented at the online PA Symposium “Ecology, Nature and Parapsychology” on November 21, 2020; program chaired by Renaud Evrard, President of the Parapsychological Association. Download the Abstract at https://www.parapsych.org/articles/37/525/ecology_nature_and.aspx The Parapsychological Association is an international professional organization of scientists and scholars engaged in the study of psi (or 'psychic') experiences, such as telepathy, clairvoyance, psychokinesis, psychic healing, and precognition. Jacob W. Glazier, PhD, has a doctorate degree in Psychology: Consciousness and Society from the University of West Georgia. He is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Positive Human Development and Social Change at Life University and an online Adjunct Professor in the Department of Applied Psychology at New York University – Steinhardt. He is author of Arts of Subjectivity: A New Animism for the Post-Media Era. His website is https://jacobglazier.academia.edu/. Here he focuses on the philosophical, political, and linguistic writings of Jacques Derrida, particularly his book Specters of Marx. Derrida invokes concepts such as conjuration and exorcism to describe philosophical processes. As one of the founders of the post-modern, deconstruction movement, Derrida wielded an enormous influence on twentieth century academic discourse. Glazier relates this intellectual movement to issues relevant to contemporary parapsychology. Psychoanalyzing Parapsychology with Jacob Glazier

Here he describes the marginal scientific status of both parapsychology (data looking for a theory) and psychoanalysis (a theory looking for data). He points to the specific role of Jacques Lacan in focusing on the linguistic aspects of psychoanalysis. He examines some of the internal contradictions with parapsychology, such as its emphasis on the empirical method to uncover data that illuminates the weaknesses of that very method. The role of the Trickster archetype is also discussed. He offers the possibility that a new animism, guided by psychoanalytic thought can avoid the pitfalls associated with superstition. New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in "parapsychology" ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980). (Recorded on August 26, 2020.)
